Diffuse Reflection

Imagine trying to wrap a gift with crumpled wrapping paper instead of smooth, flat sheets. Much like how the crumpled paper causes the light to scatter in different directions instead of reflecting neatly, a rough surface causes light to bounce off at many angles. Just as the uneven texture of the paper disrupts your ability to create a smooth, uniform package, the irregularities on a rough surface scatter light in various directions, leading to diffuse reflection.
