Imagine you accidentally delete an important document on your computer, but the backup of that document is still safe on the cloud. This situation is similar to secondary succession in an ecosystem where the living community is wiped out, but the soil remains intact. Just as the backup allows you to restore your document without starting from scratch, the preserved soil provides the foundation for plants and organisms to quickly recolonize and restore the ecosystem.
